The History of George Arthur
Formed in 1947 George Arthur is a firm of Chartered Accountants with over years of experience in providing a wide ranging service to our clients, many of whom are small to medium sized, locally run owner managed businesses. We are authorised to carry out both audit work and regulated for a range of investment business activities by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Our aim is to assist our clients to maximise their wealth in the most tax efficient manner and to help them meet their ever increasing obligation to comply with taxation and other legislation.
We have a very high ratio of qualified Chartered Accountants to partners and hence a greater degree of experience that would normally be found in a firm of our size. Our investment in best of breed software enables us to provide in house cost effective solutions and advice to our Clients. As members of our Institutes Audit and Tax faculties we have additional technical support available, when required.
We regularly review the latest versions of business software so that our recommendations to our clients are based on a full working knowledge of that software. Those recommendation are therefore based on what product will best do the job for the particular client, not necessarily on what is the current "best seller." We provide full training and support for any software installed as a result of our recommendations. Once installed data exchange with our clients is usually by e-mail or magnetic media making paper "books" a thing of the past. We also have first hand experience of hardware upgrades including networking, backup strategies, data recovery from failed hard drives and all aspects of e-commerce.

Our Team
Peter Rook, FCA
Peter, a director of the company, trained with a City firm of Chartered Accountants (who are now part of Grant Thornton) and qualified in 1981. Tired of commuting he joined George Arthur's Welwyn Garden City office in that same year. He became a partner in 1987 since when he has been primarily responsible for all technical issues affecting the firm. A general practitioner, he has a wide experience of all accountancy, taxation and Information Technology matters. He has a full working knowledge of the most popular accounting, payroll and other business related software currently available. Having built computers from scratch and been responsible for setting up the company’s own computer network he advises clients on how to do so using different versions of Microsoft Windows, and also lost data recovery following hard drive failure. Peter is a member of the ICAEW's Tax Faculty, with his taxation specialisations being those relating to tax planning for the family involving Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax and the taxation of Trusts.
Jane Rook, FCA
Jane, a director of the company, trained with a medium sized firm known as Hereward Phillips, now part of Smith and Williamson LLP. Having qualified in 1980, she took a career break to bring up her two children for a five year period. She returned to public practice with George Arthur and became a partner on 1st April, 2000. A general practitioner, Jane has specialist knowledge of Charities and property owning and construction companies, with her taxation specialties being VAT and Stamp Duty Land Tax.
David Malewicz, FCA
David trained and qualified with Edwards & Co, a small firm based in Luton, Beds which later merged with Ashdens, a London firm, following which David was promoted to Partner. David, who is married with 3 children joined George Arthur in 2001. He has over years of all round experience of most audit, accountancy and taxation matters, and has dealings with a variety of clients, including farmers and Lloyds names.
